Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Tooth extractions are necessary when one or more of the following dental issues occur, resulting in the need to preserve your oral health:

  • Advanced gum disease – If periodontitis is evident and causes gum recession or loose teeth, we may need to remove one or more teeth to avoid worsening symptoms.
  • Significant tooth decay – When a tooth is severely decayed and cannot be treated with tooth-colored fillings or dental crowns, the only solution is to remove it to stop the spread of infection.
  • Facial trauma – If an accident occurs and causes a tooth to break, or the root becomes damaged, we will need to remove the tooth.
  • Serious infection – An abscessed tooth cannot be treated any other way than with removal. This can help to stop the infection from spreading.
  • A baby tooth refuses to fall out – If you have a child whose baby tooth will not fall out on its own, we will need to remove it so that the permanent one can come in.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

There are two ways we can remove the tooth. The first is with a simple extraction, which allows us to grip the tooth, rock it loose, and remove it before tending to the extraction site. The second is a surgical extraction, and it’s a little more involved since it’s used when the tooth is underneath the gumline. In this case, we need to create a small incision in the gums to access it before removing it piece by piece. With all of that said, the first step of the treatment process is always the same: to numb your mouth. That way, you don’t experience any pain or discomfort as we work to remove the tooth.
